Friday afternoon
The alliance got off to a strong start, with 11 and 42 teams
posting a strong win in the first round of a double elimination match against
the 36-24-8 eighth seeded alliance.
The second round saw team 13 on the field, and the capping
strategy quickly in disarray. One of the teams allied against us had been
matched with us earlier, and was well aware of our strategy. They
proceeded to unseat the capping ball while our driver tried to hold it down.
Leverage beat gravity, as usual, and they actually flipped our robot over.
Our driver was successful in righting the robot, using the versatile arm, but
without the ability to cap, their hanging robot gave the margin of victory.
The final match saw the 11 and 42 teams once again with accurate
shooting, but the rival alliance also piled up points, and in the absence of a
cap, their hanging robot gave them a 5 point victory margin (75-70). Their
alliance was successful up until the finals, when it was overcome by the
27-18-48 second-seeded alliance.

After we congratulated our opponents, and thanked our alliance partners, we
headed back to the pit area to have a scrimmage between the team and the adult
coaching and support contingent on the practice field. We also meet a
number of folks from Radio Shack, including Joel Carter, the Vice President for
Product Marketing. He was very gracious, and discussed Radio Shack's
commitment and enthusiasm for the Vex product and the FIRST relationship.
He also discussed (in broad terms) upcoming products for the Vex line, including
the programming environment. It is to be C-based, with a visual shell not
dissimilar to the Mindstorms programming environment. It will allow just
the Visual environment, just the C environment, or the two side-by-side so you
can watch the generation of C code from the visual tokens. It sounds like
lots of fun is on the way!
He also introduced us to Grant Imahara from Industrial Light and Magic
(Lucas), and now a host on Myth Busters (Discovery Channel, a favorite show with
my team). He builds models and animatronics professionally, and drives
both R2D2 and the Energizer Bunny. He has competed on both BattleBots
(Comedy Central) and Junkyard Wars (TLC). As well as being incredibly
skilled, he is a very gracious and friendly guy, and examined and drove our
robots on the practice field as well as conversing with our teams.
