Two SYRA FVC teams were in attendance Saturday, June 16th for TiECON East 2007 at the Hynes Convention Center, the AngelBots (FVC 2044) and Team Unlimited (FVC 2013). We had a great time explaining the mission of FIRST to interested attendees, demonstrating a couple of our robots, and attending the "Global Innovation: What's Next" panel discussion. The moderator was Mike Grandinetti, the Senior Lecturer in the Practice of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management. The speaker were Dean Kamen (President, DEKA Research & Development Corp. & Founder), Terry McGuire (Co-Founder and Managing General Partner, Polaris Venture Partners, Co-Founder, Inspire Pharmaceuticals, AIR) and Claudia Fan Munce (Global Managing Director, IBM Venture Capital Group and Vice President, IBM Corporate Strategy). We learned a lot about Global Innovation, and we hope that the other attendees learned something about FIRST as well. Welcome to the folks that we talked to at TiECON 2007, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on Saturday, June 16th. We hope that you learn more about FIRST from browsing our website, where we are mainly focused on Team Unlimited's participation in the FIRST Vex Challenge. Our mentoring activities for the FIRST LEGO League with the Sharon Youth Robotics Association are at http://www.syraweb.org. The community of FIRST is wide and diverse. The first point of contact is the main FIRST website - http://www.usfirst.org/. There are three primary programs that support international robotics competitions - the FIRST LEGO League (for teams 9-14 years in age), the FIRST Vex Challenge (for teams of high school age) and the FIRST Robotics Competition (also for teams of high school age). Many thousands of students learn about technology in a cooperative and competitive environment each season, with a large percentage participating for multiple years. The technologists of the future are being motivated today in this forum - FIRST is "sports for the mind!", the "hardest fun you'll ever have". Each team has put in untold hours of preparation before their first competition, with that time being the biggest benefit to their educations. We welcome you to get involved - by volunteering, helping to organize a team, donating or sponsoring. The youth you help to mentor today will help to propel the world to great achievements in the future! Contact us at Team Unlimited, or connect through the "Get Involved" section of the FIRST website. |
